Working alongside WCRS and Director Ben Scott of RSA Films, The Mill helped create the first installment of a pair of fun and imaginative spots for B&Q.
In the spot, the viewer watches lots of different combinations of kitchens transforming wall by wall as a female character cooks dinner. B&Q Employees can also be seen pushing and pulling different designs into place to show off the flexibility of B&Q’s custom kitchens.
The Mill were on hand in both the pre production and post production stages to help plan meticulously and deliver this complicated advert.
Due to all the actors and set pieces moving around The Mill focused on rebuilding some of the kitchen units. Some set pieces were augmented, some touched up and others constructed entirely in 3D.
Mill 2D Lead James Mac Explains in further detail ‘It was such an amazing opportunity to work with Ben.
Initially a substantial amount of time was spent in 3D previsualisation for the Kitchen project. Ben needed to have all the sets built. We assisted by constructing in 3D, roughly placing, and then animating the pieces to construct the kitchens.
Before the shoot, Ben was able to take these carefully choreographed designs to the set builders who then constructed the designs from these plans. It was a mammoth task.
The floor was a particularly difficult element to approach. The studio floor became very dirty and marked during the shoot. Therefore a full floor replacement was also needed.
Another interesting task in this piece was the matte painting on the glass sliding down into frame. Onset the glass proved very heavy and there were many reflections in the glass due to all the lights and people in the studio. We were tasked with making that all disappear.
Projects like this rarely come around, where a director has a vision for an in-camera piece so well thought out and conceived preshoot. It was an immense undertaking, and we hope to work with Ben in the future.’
