For 'Ice Age', the second music video The Mill has worked on for the group, the finishing was broken into two stages. Once the base layer composites were completed, the entire project was exported and run through various analogue monitors and recorders. This technique created an unpredictable range of distortion effects that were then woven back into the base conform to degrade the Alexa look and support the motif of the world freezing. The melting 'erasure' techniques used on the stock footage and the gif animations where the footage seems skipped or seized up also further this theme. These effects paired with the beautiful color grade and cinematography resulted in this intriguing music video.
"Our aim in the color correct was to enhance the subdued melancholy cool of the lighting while still keeping it beautiful in the skin tones, a feel that contrasted nicely with the analogue effects in the middle of the piece," said Mill Colorist Fergus McCall. We also used a blend through various hand drawn shapes of two significantly different looks to create interest at the edges of the image. All colorists know, however, that interesting techniques like this only look best if the raw material is well lit, and there's no doubt Linus provided us with great images to build on."
