The idea of synesthesia (which the promo is based on) is a neurological phenomenon, in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. For example, a particular sound that can trigger a colour in one's mind; the sound can often change the perceived hue, brightness and scintillation of the colour.
Mill colourist Matt Osborne comments, "It was fantastic to collaborate with Mathy and Fran once again. This one shot promo for artist Anna Calvi was all about the gradual shift of the colour spectrum, while keeping the skin tones nice and golden. Shot by the talented Jake Scott on 35mm 2 perf it was a real pleasure to grade."
Jake added, "Shooting on 35ml is definitely more fun - everyone concentrates a bit harder and I still think it's the better medium to film on. It's the optimum medium for skin tone, which always looks fantastic and has great highlights, and when we bring it into the grading suite, there's already greater colour separation on the palette than there would be if shot on digital. I would always shoot on film unless there's a reason not to."
