Working with BBH and Director David Leon out of Black Sheep Studios, The Mill helped to create this haunting and poignant short film inspired by the classic fairytale ‘The Ugly Duckling’ by Hans Christian Anderson.
The piece is one of many which have been created as part of an initiative led by Google entitled ‘The Greatest Stories Retold’, which has seen agencies and production companies from across the industry take part in reimagining popular stories.
Rather than taking the viewer on a light-hearted journey, ‘Swan’ questions modern society’s obsession with vanity and beauty which is powerfully represented within the motif of a swan feather.
Mill 2D Lead Artist Souhail Wilson explains, ‘David’s stellar direction and clear innovative vision allowed us to creatively enhance what was already a beautifully shot piece.
Whilst we worked on most of the shots in the film, from adding atmospherics to set removal, the most challenging were those where we added the feathers that Actor Geoff Bell interacted with, along with the final transition shot.
Black Sheep Studios were keen to have us involved from the pre-production phase of the project. This ensured that we had all the elements we needed, allowing us to keep the effects subtle so as to complement the beauty of film, rather than distract from it.’
