Somewhere between a fashion shoot and a music promo the premise behind the video, which was released a few days before Maddie’s 13th birthday, is that she is “dancing her way to teenagerdom.” Maddie is filmed dancing in various locations including her bedroom, a diner and her school corridors, to a punk soundtrack over which Chloë Sevigny reads an extract from Lesley Arfin’s ‘Dear Diary.’ Ultimately the mood of the video is one of freedom and youthful rebellion, taking its cue from cult films from the 90s.
Mill Colourist Oisin O’Driscoll says, “I was really excited to work on this piece with director Bunny Kinney. From the offset we got on great and really bounced ideas off each other. As the video is a celebration of Maddie turning 13 we wanted to have a bright, warm film style look. Each scene had a very distinctly different palette, which I wanted to turn into a seamless look. This was achieved by keeping a steady level of contrast throughout and introducing a warm summer haze and selective saturation to keep the youthful energy of the film.”
