The Mill came together with Droga5 and RESET Director Johnny Green to create ‘Photon,' a film that takes you on a journey from the sun to a family home, following a single photon of light with two possible scenarios: First, a dead end where wasted energy hits the roof of a house with no end result. The second scenario, photons hit the solar panels on the roof of the home, providing all the power a family needs to go about their day.
'Photon' is NRG’s latest spot for their Home Solar product campaign. The Mill team created a number of vignettes depicting the single journey of the life of a photon traveling from the sun.
The sun, outer space, a comet, Venus, satellite, passing through the atmosphere, airplane, skydivers and the neighborhood at the end of the film were all elements created by The Mill’s CG team. Each element demonstrates the distance of the journey, only to be ended by the lack of solar panels on the home back on earth. The CG team worked closely with renowned water painter Chris Parks to create abstract representations of each element.
Through the photon's journey from the sun to the earth, the film reveals the astonishing fact that enough sun light hits the earth every hour to power everything on it for an entire year. All we need to do is take the step to harness that and turn it into power.
‘Photon’ is part of a larger campaign that includes outdoor installations in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, which will educate consumers on the cost savings of solar energy. Billboards will also convey varying messages about how much energy the sun has the potential to generate. The film will run in cinema, TV and online and via social networks.
