Director Michel Gondry, who learned a thing or two from Bjork, creates a sensory disturbance with this warped and distorted journey. Jack, Meg and the other characters, even a car, seem to stretch and shrink like Alice in Wonderland as they pass through the various sets, giving a performance on The Conan O'Brian show, driving through Times Square, and finally arriving 'home', where Conan rejoins them.
Unusually, this music video was filmed in one take. Michel and his team built an anamorphically-adjusted set for which the props, furniture and background are either half or double their normal height. The Mill Flame artists Angus Kneale and Richard de Carteret then expanded or compressed each room and the characters. They and the visual effects team made seamless transitions between the various sets and added extra final touches.
"The wonderful thing about this project", says Angus, "was that we had the chance to be part of another one of Michel's simple, yet ingenious ideas."
