Happiness follows Coca-Cola wherever it goes in this campaign, as first seen in 'Download Happiness,' the brand's touching ad for Super Bowl 2015, although this one has a lot less to do with the Internet than it does dolphins, exploding hot dog stands and everything in between. To complement the sunny scene of bizarre events set in Barcelona - which, according to creative director Chris Knight, was shot in December and actually very chilly! - a team of artists at The Mill used a combination of software including Massive, Bifrost, Maya, Nuke, Houdini and Zbrush.
3D lead artist Ed Boldero was on set with Knight to ensure a smooth transition from shoot to post. Boldero explains, "We used Massive to populate the backgrounds of the beach shots with beachgoers and then had them react to the meteor impacts and explosions going on around them. The exploding hotdog stand was built and lit from the on set reference, down to the hotdogs and condiments and then fractured and blown apart in Houdini, alongside additional simulated explosions, before being composited into live action explosion plates."
Knight elaborates, "For the fire on the life guard hut and the big explosion, we composited flames, smoke and burnt wood textures to complement the combination of practical effects on set. The meteor, however, is full-CG (created in Houdini and composited in Nuke) with added flames and smoke trails."
The shadowy, mysterious shot at the end of the spot leads to an unexpected alternative ending featuring a giant, thirsty, coughing sandworm. "We had great fun making that!" says Boldero. "We created and animated it in Zbrush and Maya and composited into the matte painting and live action plates alongside more flames, atmospheic elements and running and screaming Massive agents."
Curious what the sandworm's up to? Watch the alternate ending here.
