The film celebrates the Olympic debut of Women's Ski Jumping, showcasing Sarah Hendrickson accompanied by the words of Amelia Earhart, both incredible and inspiring women representing pioneers of flight.
Executive Creative Director and on-set shoot supervisor, Angus Kneale explains: "Visa 'Flying' required two different shoot locations, the first in Utah and the second in Lake Tekapo and Mt. Cook.
"As Sarah couldn't leave the Olympic practice ground in Park City, we initially shot everything in the very warm summer of Utah where athletes prepared for the Games in Sochi. During the shoot we paid incredibly close attention to details that would help create the look and feel of the spot from the angle of the sun, time of day, through to installing a camera on the Ski rig that tamps down the snow on the run to capture the slight reflections in Sarah's goggles.
"We then flew to New Zealand (during their winter), and from a helicopter shot the snowy peaks around Lake Tekapo and Mt. Cook, again ensuring we had captured different times of day for the right elements we needed to make a truly spectacular photo-real spot. The breathtaking footage was transferred back to our New York studio to our lead 2D artist Corey Brown, by chance, a native New Zealander himself."
Corey adds: "Our 2D team were tasked with creating a very realistic snowy landscape. We based this on the actual geography of the mountain and then to enhance the look and feel of the cold and snow we added in ice texture to the slope."
The film was graded by The Mill in London's Head of Color, Seamus O'Kane and the result is Olympian Hendrickson speeding down the icy ramp and taking off, floating against the snowy mountains and blue sky in slow motion.
