Eyebrows raise as the man, played by Gavin and Stacey actor Robert Wilfort, strips to his underpants (and Barclaycard) before jumping into a waterslide that winds in, out, and around all kinds of buildings and startled observers.
Mill VFX supervisors Austen Humphries and Hitesh Patel oversaw the Waterslide in Brazil. 'We were hanging off roofs 40 floors up, in the subway, in a market, a water park, a regular park, to name but a few of the locations,' says Austen. 'It was hard work, but an absolute blast. Technically it was a challenge, but made a lot easier by a great director, production company and ad agency who just plain loved waterslides.' shoot
Jordi Bares, Joint Head of Mill 3D says, 'It was great being involved early in the Barclaycard job; we all benefited from going through all the possibilities before agreeing the computer graphics. We worked very hard on all areas, from lighting and rendering complex surfaces on a huge scale, to animating the character and his interaction with the water inside the slide.'
The Mill completed over 110 shots including creating tests beforehand to construct the waterslide network. As a Flame artist, Jonathan Westley says, 'Barclaycard was the perfect job to work on as it combined 2D and 3D elements to achieve the most realistic results.' Telecine operator Adam Scott gave it all a final hyper-real grade in Baselight.
