When Progressive approached The Mill with this charming script, we were happy to collaborate with the agency on this spot, adding our own fun little bits and gags to it along the way. The goal was to bring Progressive's policy box to life and give him a sense of bravado and swagger. We liked the idea of the box being this sort of reluctant playboy that had a smarmy yet likable personality.

Our team's biggest challenge was finding the character's voice. Since Progressive already has a very popular mascot in the enthusiastic cashier Flo, we felt it was important that we got a celebrity comedic voice to embody and influence our animation. We needed a voice that could stand up to the mega hit that is Flo. Some of our first choices were guys like Charlie Day, Jason Mantzoukas, and Nick Kroll. The agency loved our suggestions and threw in some of their own. The challenge came with locking down the contract with the voice talent - we were eager to get our edit locked and to start to pair our animated box to the voice. We were thrilled to finally sign on Chris Parnell of SNL and 30 Rock fame to be the voice of The Policy.
"Part of what Arnold responded to in our treatment was our character details that came through in set art direction and props," said Brian Gossett, Art Director at The MIll. "We sprinkled in a lot of Easter egg-like details including photos of The Policy from his adventures in life, which we added in post. We thought, of course his favorite sport is boxing as he's a talking box so we put him in a boxing ring with gloves, a bloody lip and champion belt. One of the practical props that got everyone excited was the ice sculpture we had made of The Policy that you can see in the pool scene. Additionally, we had an actual tuxedo fabricated for the tailor scene that hangs on the valet in the background."
