She begins to tell a story of how she'll design many embroidered pieces to sell, then hire others to make them, buy a shop - in fact we follow her dream right through to the end with her marrying a film star! The entire dream is brought to life by her embroidery. As we reach the end of the film our young dreamer is looking very tired and unwell and issues a warning for all young ladies who are suffering from tiredness to get their iron count tested, ending with 'Our dreams never get tired, but we do'.
Luke Colson, Head of our Mill Studio team explains how we brought this dream to life. "After 8 weeks, and some late nights, our labour of love for Thumbnail Pictures, Mudra & Pepsico is ready to show the world and we really think it was worth it.
"When we agreed to take on this project, we still had reservations as to how best to achieve the look that the client needed. Stop frame, photo real, cross stitch animation... And we explored a lot of different ways of creating the cross-stitch look, including physically sewing with real needles and thread and damaging fingertips along the way! After photographing and scanning these in along with background materials we took these individual elements into After Effects and utilised Trapcodes awesome plugin, Form.
"This enabled us to create a stable grid so that we could animate pixel images converting them to the look and feel of real cross-stitch. We then combined individual stitches of threads and wools with Trapcode Particular, and painstakingly created realistic outline stitching around our characters and backgrounds. This of course, was just the beginning... We needed to illustrate and animate every scene.
"Finally our team of internal designers and illustrators including Carl Addy and Simon Landrein worked on the characters and scenes and four dedicated After Effects animators converted the illustrations to cross stitch and set about animating."
We think the end result demonstrates the care, detail and talent that went in to creating this dream embroidery world, so take a look!
