Lulu Guinness' style is known for the beautiful way she mixes modern and vintage, and we all wanted to make sure this short animation was no different, 'Think of them as Fred and Ginger' director Vicky Mather remembers Lulu telling her. The result is this 45 second adventure, in which Lulu's luggage bags travel from her shop in London, across the English Channel to Paris, and back again. 'We took inspiration for the shop front from Lulu's famous shop front bags, their illustrative quality was a perfect starting point for a story' explains Vicky. The two bags then dance across a giant map to make their way to Paris, 'The Map was inspired by a clip from 'The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle' where Fred and Ginger dance across this gigantic map, it's amazing- I also wanted it to cheat the perspective to give a feeling of infinite space.' Our team then 'stepped' in, to get this animated bag dance on it's feet 'When it came to planning the animation, I worked with a choreographer to plan the steps out. The animators then took this reference and worked closely to it.'
'Shooting stop motion, added with a flutter of motion graphics and a lovely grade, Lulu Guinness 'The World is Your Oyster' was a lot of fun to Post' for our VFX producer Tracey Khan and the team. 'We helped Vicky bring her work to life, she managed to capture everything in camera and with a bit of help the film looks as glamorous as the bags. Vicky was lovely to work with and a true professional. Her work is amazing and we were very happy to help her out on this film.'
Being a Technicolor inspired film the colour palette and lighting was very important, and even this aspect of the project was used to take Lulu's luggage on a journey 'We chose to tell the story through the lighting so you get the feeling of a day passing. It was important for us to work with a colourist afterwards to really fine tune everything.'
Finally the whole thing was sealed with a kiss and the all important signature 'Lulu's handwriting is a very important part of the film and The Mill helped us out with the graphical animation'.
